Julian Chan at the Norah Sande Award, 2023

Honoured to have received First Prize at the Norah Sande Award for young pianists in Eastbourne, East Sussex.

The competition took place with two live rounds over two days - the following was my (rather French) programme for the first round:

Debussy Préludes: XXIV. « Feux d'artifice »

F Couperin VIème ordre: « Les bergeries »

Meyerbeer/Alkan Sinfonia from « Le prophète »

While I performed the following works in the final:

Chopin Etude Op. 10 No. 8

Beethoven Sonata Op. 31 No. 1

Rzewski North American Ballads: IV. Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues

The competition was held at the Birley Centre, Eastbourne College, and was adjudicated by Richard Deering and Ruth Gerald. Fellow pianists Aïda Lahlou and Leah Nicholson won second and third prize respectively.

The audience were very kind and appreciative and I had a lovely time performing in Eastbourne. As part of the first prize package, I will be returning to the town in October to perform Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 26 in D major, known as the Coronation concerto. Additionally, I will also be giving a solo recital at the Hinchingbrooke Performing Arts Centre in Huntingdon in April 2024.
